Solo a Roma

Rome is one of the great cities of the world , rich in a history that spans 28 centuries.

In summer, many Romans move out as the tourists move in (10 million per annum). Understandable, with over 900 churches, the Colosseum, St Peter’s Basilica, Pantheon, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain with pizza, penne, fettuccini, lasagne, gelato, cappuccino and vino to dine out on.

David began photographing Rome in 2015, but it was the mid spring of 2016 when this exhibition took shape.  David was welcomed for a week into a Benedictine monastery in the centre of Rome - a place conducive for silence, stillness, simplicity and contemplation. Each morning he would wake early, quietly leave and walk in search for images. After photographing, David would return to his spartan room (in isolation from the world) and share a contemplative, silent meal with the monks..

“ Photographing Rome became an extension of this experience. For me, being alone is a peaceful place - and staying at the monastery deepenned this. I spoke very little that week and my own solitude enabled the photos and theme to emerge. The photos all express stillness and silence .

David was inspired and captivated by the colours of Rome, her history, old-world street scenes and increasing cultural diversity. Solo a Roma depicts the quieter, unseen moments and explores the individualised experience of being alone.
